ONE IN THREE CAMPAIGN – MALE VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

By The Rights of Man | Source | December 6, 2009

There are some excellent web-sites and campaigns available around the world highlighting the issue of male victims of domestic violence. Amen in Ireland is superb as is One in Three in Australia, launched neatly at the time of the start of national domestic violence week.

Let us hope some sites are improved in the UK. The Esteem site is good and the ManKind Initiative site is undergoing a refresh I had heard. The Men's Advice Line (you would hope so considering the amount of public cash they get) is clear but the Dyn Project site could do with some work.

  • The "1 in 3" campaign is misleading, because it implies that 1 in 3 victims of intimate partner violence is male. In fact, at least half of all IPV is perpetrated against males by females. It's all in the way that you define victimization. The 1 in 3 statistic is accurate only if you define IPV as attacks which cause injuries. In terms of attacks alone, there is gender parity; the phrase being used should thus be "1-for-1."
